It brings tears to my eyes as I contemplate the last decade. As we remember all who perished in that tragedy and honor all who have given their lives in the ensuing conflicts, I’m of the opinion that it is always better to look forward rather than back; to focus on hope and promise rather than languish in despair and melancholy.Towards that end, it is good to remember the response of the eagle to storms that would destroy lesser animals. In response to unexpected violent tempests, the eagle soars and rises above the disturbance, using unforeseen forces to propel it to greater heights. In contrast to other animals who stay mired in the storm and are consumed, the eagle’s response to the very thing that could destroy it allows it to propel itself to levels unattainable without the disturbance.Ten years after 9/11, let us all commit ourselves to rising to otherwise unattainable levels rather than allowing ourselves to be destroyed in the disturbance.May God grant all of us the courage, perseverance, compassion and unity that we so dearly need in these troubling times. My family wishes you the best this 9/11 weekend.Michael E.
